Road Trip from Sydney to Wollongong

Sydney to Wollongong is a beautiful one-hour road trip that takes you through the national park as well as the scenic drive along the ocean. The old princess highway meanders through lazy downs of Stanwell Park, Scarborough, Coledale and Bulli finally merging back to the Princess Highway. You can either take the freeway straight to Illawarra Region or alternatively turn left towards National Park immediately after passing Sutherland. 

A quicker way to reach Wollongong is to get off the freeway near Stanwell Park. This will save you around 25 minutes of drive through the National Park. At Otford, there is Koala Sanctuary and Hindu Temple worth seeing. Some farmstead also offers horse-riding lessons and short stays at the farm. Stanwell Park is famous for Paragliding at Bald Hill Lookout.

The paragliders land near the beach at Stanwell Park. These coastal towns have a number of beach houses which are a popular escape for Sydney siders during the hot summer season through November to January. The roads get crowded over the weekend attracting hundred for people taking a south-coast road trip for a day. During the winter season, however, the small towns are not as busy. The drive, however, is still very enjoyable taking you through the beautiful bridge along the ocean. 

The driving distance from Stanwell Park to Wollongong is around 50 minutes. You can stopover at ColeCliff or Thirroul to enjoy coffee or lunch.

Wollongong is a popular destination for holidaymakers during summers driving along the south coast to Kiama, Jervis and Batemans Bay. Wollongong attracts large crowds because of its proximity to Sydney City and beautiful beaches stretching from Stanwell Park all the way to Wollongong City. Further along the way, Princess Highways turns inland passing through Shoalhaven and Kangaroo Valley before reaching Jervis Bay.

Mount Keira is located behind the University of Wollongong. The scenic lookout on the top of the mountains captures great views all the way to Shoalhaven. There is a nice cafe at the top of the mountain that closes around 4 pm. This area is not accessible after dark. 

In summers, Wollongong is ideal for swimming and surfing. North Wollongong beach is great for a picnic and hire a boat for a day trip. Jamberoo Water Park is a popular family destination in Southern Highlands which is around 45-minute drive from Wollongong towards Jervis Bay. Kangaroo Valley and Southern Highlands have near Maitland have great drives and small towns worth exploring.
